Biden's DHS Secretary says a "terrific solution" to immigration surge was killed by "irresponsible politics"
Washington — As Secretary of the Department of Homeland
Security, Alejandro Mayorkas remarked that as his tenure in leading the
nation's immigration enforcement approaches its conclusion, "an excellent
solution was undermined by reckless political actions" following the
collapse of the bipartisan border agreement earlier this year.
Mayorkas highlighted the consensus achieved by a bipartisan
coalition of Senate negotiators in February regarding a border package, which
followed extensive discussions and would have represented the first significant
reform of border security policies in decades. This agreement would have
granted the president extensive authority to address unlawful border crossings.
However, the bill was swiftly dismissed by Republicans following
President-elect Donald Trump's declaration of his opposition.
In the wake of the legislation's unsuccessful passage, the
Biden administration implemented asylum restrictions that significantly
curtailed immigration levels. When questioned regarding the timing of these
measures, particularly in light of Republican criticisms suggesting that the
administration had the authority to act independently of Congress on border
issues, Mayorkas conceded that the administration might have expedited their
actions had they anticipated the collapse of the border agreement.
Reflecting on the past, Mayorkas stated in an interview
broadcast on "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" that had we
anticipated in 2020 that reckless political decisions would undermine a
commendable initiative and its outcomes, we might have acted more decisively.
His remarks coincide with a notable decrease in border crossings, which have
fallen to the lowest levels observed during the Biden administration, following
a peak a year prior.
The Secretary of Homeland Security remarked that prior to
Mr. Biden assuming office, there was a significant rise in global migration
trends during 2018 and 2019, which was subsequently impacted by the onset of
the COVID-19 pandemic. He further stated that the Biden administration has
gradually developed resources that enable the transportation of individuals and
the alleviation of pressure in regions experiencing spikes in immigration,
asserting that "we have been implementing enforcement measures at an unparalleled
level during this administration."
We are currently repatriating or expelling a greater number
of individuals within a three-year timeframe than the previous administration
managed over four years. Furthermore, we are achieving this not only in larger
quantities but also at an accelerated pace, thanks to negotiations with a wider
array of countries than has previously occurred, Mayorkas stated.
